Writing about place

This podcast of a panel discussion from last year's Manchester Literature Festival, just released by Rainy City Stories, is well worth a listen. It features writers Jenn Ashworth, Clare Dudman and Nicholas Royle talking about how place features in their work and exploring the potential and pitfalls of writing about places they know. I especially liked the bit where Nicholas Royle talks about visiting places like the abandoned Cheadle Bleachworks and how when you go in it's as if there are stories waiting to happen — 'as if story is some kind of fungoid substance that might be lying around the place just waiting to be stirred up by walking through'.
